How to make the most of a tiny space
Series on how to thrive while saving in the world’s most expensive city
Since moving to New York City, interior decorating has become a fun hobby for me. Living in New York City comes with the unique struggle of paying a ridiculously high amount for a ridiculously small space. It is common to live in studios where there is little separation between the kitchen, living room, and bed; you work, eat, and sleep all in the same space.
How you design your space ends up being incredibly important. Here are several ways to get the most out of your space:
- “Verticalize” your furniture: Make the most of the space between your floor and ceiling by getting furniture that accentuates and draws the eyes up. Slim bookcases, hanging plants, and even vertical wall art will all help.
- Plan your layout before you move in: Get your floor layout and design with existing and ideal furniture where you will put your bed, TV, desk, couch, and all the other crucial pieces of furniture. Then, you know what space you have left to work it. Only then, buy new furniture.
- Balance “closed” and “open” furniture: Having too many open bookcases or shoe racks can leave small spaces feeling cramped and cluttered. It is best to have clothes out of sight and to have “open”…
